Why IS he called Race?

And hooo boy it has definitely been too long since I saw any form of the JQ series because I forgot who was who among the adults and thought that Race was Jonny's dad. Of course I always figured that'd be a lot more exciting than being Dr. Quest's kid.

Creator Doug Wildey devised the name by combining two of his characters from a previous comic strip of his, Race Dunhill and Stretch Bannon.
An interesting thing of note is if you check out
http://surnames.meaning-of-names.com/bannon/
you will see that the surname Bannon (or O'Bainan) means 'White' in Irish. What a coincidence since he ended up with that albino white hair color, or perhaps an unintentional allusion to his Aryan-ness when you said his last name first and ended up with 'white race' ;)

Wasn't he called Race cause he use to be professional race car driver. I don't know if that was before or after he was spy.

Boy that guy sure gets around, doesn't he? Especially given if he is 32 in the show, like they said in Double Danger, wouldn't that mean he's been assigned as the Quest's bodyguard since he was about 21-22?

He was supposed to be only 22? He always seemed to be about 15 years older than that to me, like mid 40's. I also pictured him being a two pack a day smoker of Marlboro reds.

Yeah, after I watch an ep or two of this as an adult instead of as a kid who didn't get this part, I've since thought it was rather scandalous that Johnny didn't look a bit like Dr. Quest but was a dead ringer for Race Bannon.
