Clutch Cargo...the daddy of this show...

In 1959 a small animation studio pumped out 52 episodes of a cartoon called Clutch Cargo. It was presented in 5 min episodes, with about 5 episodes for each story. The animation was VERY crude...mostly still faces with REAL lips doing the talking. It made the rounds on stations everywhere in the early 1960s.

This show was plugged into the old Chicago Garfield Goose show, which I religiously watched every day after school. As a kid one pretty well ignored the silly mouths talking, as the plots were entrancing. Yes, the animation is simplistic. That's how they pumped out all those episodes in one year.

This was the ORIGINAL version of the Jonny Quest idea...a dude with white hair, a kid (his ward), and a dog...flying off to wild adventures all over the world in a plane. Any Jonny Quest fans should check this gem out.

You can see the episodes on YouTube. There are three 1 hour files there that, I believe, contain all the episodes.

ENJOY!

CORRECTION...the 3 YouTube videos only include 6 of the episodes. There are also many other singular episodes on YouTube.

Doug Wildey, the character designer for Jonny Quest, got started in TV animation at Cambria Studios, the company that produced Clutch Cargo. He worked there with Alex Toth, who later designed The Herculoids.

I like those early 1960s programmes. They are beautiful music, backgrounds, characters, and story. Even though the animation is said to be lower quality, the animation is there and it is amazing how much movement they included.

It also shouldn't be surprising that the people that worked on Clutch Cargo, Captain Fathom, Space Angel, Etc. worked on Jonny Quest. The backgrounds and characters and music of Jonny Quest are also realistic.
