The Tv Series vs the movie

How dark is the TV series?

I seem to recall the tv series depicting The Addams family as eccentric and quirky but still frightening but the movies seem a lot darker with them pouring boiling hot water over Christmas carollers and killing them.

Did the TV series ever go as far as the movies?

You hit it on the head. The film is a lot darker. I like it but I like the TV show better. Probably because it was my first experience of Addams Family, so it feels like the 'real' family to me with the film feeling more like a spinoff.

Thanks for confirming that. I'd not seen the tv series in years but seen the films occasionally and though "This seems too dark"

Yeah ... I guess it depends on your tastes. The films aren't THAT dark: they still involve a lot of humour and are definitely better classified as comedy rather than horror. They're just closer to the latter than the TV show is. I know that some people prefer the films for that reason. I still like them, but I LOVE the show!

I never thought of the Addams family tv series as dark. It was on the same number of years as "The Munsters." I actually didn't notice anything strange about the Addams. Shows you how I was raised.

Although the '90s movies' darkness was in keeping with Charles Addams' original cartoons, the movie was too loud and too shrill -- it felt like a bad TV reunion movie which is trying trying too damned hard.

The 1964 series, however, was strangely soothing.

Non-sequiturs are delicious.

Actually there was a lot of love in the TV series. They were all kind and respectful to each other and always happily welcomed guests and strangers into their home treating them all with care, respect and hospitality. It was their "style" of living that would put off others.

If Mama Cass had handed that ham sandwich to Karen Carpenter two lives might have been saved
