things that date this show

What are some things on this show that remind viewers that it was made over 40 years ago, besides the fact that it's in black and white.

Doctors making housecalls, which SHOULD still happen today, it seems like we are devolving instead of Evolving.

In the first episode, "The Addams Family Goes to School" Gomez, while speaking to Miss Comstock, references the Telstar satellite.

"Pull the string, pull the string!" -Bela Lugosi

We don't worry about being violated...whereas the shows today are nothing but sex...drugs...gore....it's disgusting.

Morticia and Gomez LOVE each other.
Wednesday and Pugsley did all that work for that guy and got paid 75 cents!!
Gay meant happy....haha

the list goes on forever....wish I was born then...hate being 17 now-a-days. =[

You can be 17 with true old fashioned values. Theres nothing wrong with that.
I follow traditional beliefs, though I wish I was 17.

The entire episode "The Addams Family Meets a Beatnik" could be considered thematically dated.

"Pull the string, pull the string!" -Bela Lugosi

Very good, anymore?

There are a few cold war references in "The Addams Family" (1964); the episode "The Addams Family Meets the VIPs" is a good example.

cousin itt couldn't become a *stewardess* because he isn't a girl.

Didn't they have stewards back then?

In the episode with the new neighbors, the man tells his wife she has to go make nice with the Addams' and she reluctantly agrees and says, "To love and honor is one thing, but why do they have to say obey?"

In this show the 'character' of Thing, which is just a living human hand, is only ever seen in reaching out of a box, so it was clearly just a person reaching his hand out of a box. in the movies they used CGI for Thing, and turned Thing into a literal walking hand.

CGI!!!!

reply

What he meant was CGI is generally used to create things that aren't there, in the Addams movie they used green screen, the actor was in a green suit or sleeve with only his hand showing

reply

I think the movie took away from the character of Thing when they showed it as a disembodied hand. In the series you knew that Thing was just somebody with their hand reaching through a box but it still didn't keep you from speculating and wondering exactly what Thing was. The movie took all that away.

reply

Yes, we have been de-evolving for quite some time now with no end in sight.

They were helpful and kind to their neighbors and GASP! actually talked to them. It really seems rare today if neighbors actually speak to each anymore about anything except to call the cops.

Things have really changed so much in the last two decades alone.

Try not to take life too seriously, no one gets out alive.

Exactly!! LEAVE THING IN THE BOX!!

Question your prejudices.

thing outside his box is like kermit riding a bicycle. just...wrong.

reply

I think Thing in the box a lot better, I didn't see it as just someone reaching through a box, I thought of Thing as some kind of "creature" and you only saw his hand.

When they did the hand walking around, that took the mystery away.

They mention The Beatles a few times during the series. In one episode, Gomez suggests that Itt join The Beatles but digressed by saying, "he'd be too much for them."

reply

You beat me to the punch, Rockhound6165. There's very few pop-culture references in the show, except for the Beatles, who are referenced numerous times. That in itself doesn't date it so much since the Beatles have also proven to be timeless, but most of the Beatles references are to their long hair (practically every Cousin Itt episode has a Beatles reference) -- and by today's standards, the Beatles of 1964-66 were quite clean-cut and wholesome in appearance.

The episode with Jack LaLanne is also kinda dated since his show went off the air in the mid-'80s (not to mention the fact that he died a few months ago!).

In Art and the Addams Family, they are trying to call Picasso...

actuslly, in one episode Gomez is in a courtroom and thing comes out of the bag Gomez sets on the table.

So it's clearly not just a person reaching his hand out of a box, even though thing is never actuallu shown coming all the way out of the box onscreen.

There are also other references in the series such as strangers or visitors seeing thing in the graveyard and remarking "it was a hand. Nothing else but a hand".

slthough as a kid, I also thought it was meant to be just a person reaching his hand out of a box.

How about the Stock Ticker machine with the thin strips of paper? Today, Gomez would be watching CNBC or checking his stocks on the internet.

I'd like ten thousand marbles please.

reply

Cool these are differences.

You beat me to it, the stock ticker was the first thing that came to my mind. This detail was meant to look dated at the time, as stock tickers (based on telegraph technology) were largely replaced by computers even in the '60s. Also, Gomez's double-breasted striped suit was intended to look old-fashioned at the time, especially with its accouterments, like a pair of eyeglasses on a lanyard tucked into the pocket. That style of suit goes in and out of fashion, but still looks dated.

reply

Well lets see,

They actually DO THINGS TOGETHER as a family, they play cards, chess, with REAL cards and chess pieces, instead of on the computer, they make pictures with film, Lurch plays an instrument ~who does that anymore?~, Morticia knits ~who knits or crochets anymore?~

In short, who does ANYTHING anymore other than TEXT? lol

There were references to the space race:

Gomes: You've joined the space program!
Fester: What space program?
Gomez: Ours of course! ...Unless you've gone over to the Russians?

Seeing how unique the Addams' were, they really don't seem as dated as other shows. (Aside from the black & white filming)

I wouldn't describle B&W cinematography as dated. Vintage? Yes. Unfairly marginalized? Definitely! But dated? Not a chance!
