Is this movie available in DVD?

Hi kuuaurinko.

According to imdb, it is being released today on the 17th of January.

It's a remarkable film, no doubt.

What are YOU doing here?

I've been living off an old bootleg of this movie. I wonder how the dvd transfer looks. New Yorker forked out for this, so no doubt it's a must own. The one I'm really raring to get on dvd is his other movie, "How Tasty Was My Frenchman". I have the vhs of it, but it's something like 6 or 7 years old and worn out at the beginning and end. It goes great on a double feature with Walkabout or even Aguirre...

lol Nuwav..... undoubtedly the "How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman" (English title) is one to see. I've not even been able to view the film as of yet. But perhaps one day. (And I REFUSE to drag the old vhs player out of the attic!)

So many films could be made more readily-available for us, but they simply aren't.... (YET!)..... but there's no sense giving up hope.

Let me tell you, "Believe me, you. You are missing out on one of the best films Brasil has to offer." Vidas Secas is good, but Como Era Gostoso is much better in every aspect. It's really a shame over-rated junk like Cidade De Deus gets a bunch of undeserved accolades when other Brasilian directors have done films that truly depict/convey/express a veritable, frank, and candid message of the history and life in Brasil - and Latin America, in a general sense. In spite of some Cinema Novo directors coming off as self-serving and arrogant in their manifestos, you can't help but agree with them sometimes and admire their efforts. I think Carlos Diegues is a happy medium between the radical left and the sell-outs on the right. His work neither demeans, patronises, or insults its subjects and audience. That's a difficult thing to do in social satire.

You know, Nuwav.... we agree totally on the recent film "Cidade de Dieu".... City of God. I didn't think the film was all that great, but it seemed to garner a lot of attention at the awards ceremonies.

Definitely, Diegues is great. The director I'd like to see MANY more films from is Hector Babenco. Unfortunately, some of his films are having difficulty being brought to dvd.... (i.e. the exceptional film, "At Play In The Fields Of The Lord".)

Vidas Secas and Pixote are two of the most incredible Brazilian pictures that I've ever seen. Now I must see the film Como Era Gostoso!

Quick question: who's di ck do I have to suck to see Macunaima?

reply

Mine. Macunaima's playing at our local film society (Wellington New Zealand) as part of a spotlight on Cinema Novo. Didn't think much of Barren Lives though, to be honest.
