Missing scenes?

What are the missing scenes from the origninal version of the film?
What happens in the missing 20 minutes?

When I saw the 2 hour 29 minute dvd version, released from Sony, I thought it was the long version since so many news reels were in the film, but it was the short version. If anything could have been cut from this great film it could have been the news reels. They could have gotten rid of them and kept the missing scripted scenes with the actors.

Does anyone know what those scenes were?

The Newsreels were annoying - once would have been good but there were too many.

There were missing scenes between Elke Sommer and George Hamilton. During the bedroom scene she tells him that she had been gang-raped by Russian soldiers, then they kiss. The following scenes were cut: she then gets undressed (sex is not shown) She then wakes up in bed, he is asleep, its still night time, and she walks from the room naked, he then wakes up, she returns, he gets dressed and she shows him out of the apartment still naked. End of missing scenes.

Can only guess that these scene were cut due to the nudity.

Wow, thank you so much for that information.
May I ask where you found it? Far too little is known about this great film!

You can find some information on this website 'Pulp International'

Just checked and some stills from the deleted scene are there, bu the full sequence is not. Search google for 'The Victors Elke Sommer and George Hamilton' and sure you will find the rest.

I saw The Victors on its initial release in a downtown theater. At that time,a film played in only one theater in larger cities and only after it was played out did in open in multiple local neighborhood venues. Depending on the popularity of the film, that could be one week or one month later. Occasionally, a film would be cut in neighborhood showings if it was on a double bill. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World had several scenes cut or shortened. In the case of The Victors I remember one odd cut that had nothing to do with length. In the scene involving the execution, just after the deserter was shot, a Christmas carol,Hark the Herald Angels Sing, was played on the soundtrack. That song was excised from the later neighborhood showing.

Wow, that's strange that they cut the song from the scene. To christmassy for a war film maybe? Thanks for sharing your memory of the film!

May have been considered too disrespectful at that time.

They also cut the scene in which a G.I. shoots the dog. To keep him from starving to death. This scene was in televised versions until the '90's. One of the morons of modern America's version of the Algonquin Round Table (The View)probably demanded it be cut.

Dave Greene: Although my only experience with viewing the missing scenes occurred over fifty years ago, a few weeks after its premiere, I still vividly remember many of them. There was a short sequence that was deleted when Eli Wallach was filling canteens at a fountain, near the top of the film. He is approached by a frighteningly emaciated little old woman in rags who is begging for food. When he gives her a chocolate bar, the shot of her incredibly wrinkled face as she ravenously devours the candy speaks volumes about the devastation that the war has brought to Italy's civilian population. There are many minor moments which enriched and deepened the impact of the movie which were clumsily deleted, probably just to shorten it. The most radical cut involved the removal of an entire episode involving a young French boy, who manages to befriend American G.I.s. They do what they can to help him with food and a few minor material goods. One night (and this scene was created with great subtlety and taste) one of the soldiers awakens to discover that the boy is trying to reward his benefactor with sexual favors. The soldier reacts with horror, causing the boy to flee in embarrassed fear. In his flight, the boy rushes into a minefield where an explosion kills him. The G.I.s are aghast and deeply remorseful over this loss. They quickly realize that, previously, German occupying troops had conditioned the boy to perform this kind of act with them. There were other unfortunate deletions, including the cutting of more detailed sequences in the story late in the film, of the relationship between the soldier (George Hamilton) and the German woman who is desperately depending on him amid her family's post-war hardships. In all, the original edit, when seen back in 1963, made the movie feel more like a stately, thoughtful European film, than the shallower, more pace-conscious American movie fare of that era.

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed memories of the film and its deleted scenes! This information is very valuable as the original print of the film is not available anymore. Hopefully someday someone will find these scenes and restore them to the film!

Dave Greene I have done extensive research into the question of surviving prints of the original cut of the film. I don't have conclusive verification, but I believe that a California University film archive contains a complete version. There is also strong indication that there are surviving prints in England. There was even news, awhile ago, that a restoration attempt was underway. Wish I could find ways to reach totally reliable sources of information. I was briefly in touch with the son of the director. Once a filmmaker, I have a passion for this issue.
