Americans seem to not like this

I am an American myself, and I really enjoyed this movie. But I noticed the average user rating by US users is 4.7, while the rest of the world gives it an 8.8. That is a pretty huge difference.

I'm wondering why this is. Do most Americans just not get the humor? Another possibility is the dialogue seems to go very fast, so perhaps it's hard for English-speakers to catch everything. I know it was a struggle for me to read all the subtitles in time.

most person and moviegoers don't like to watch movies and read subtitles at the same time

This movie seems to have strange votes. It seems that the average of females over 45 gave it a 1.4 and if you follow the link, it shows that 18 women gave it over a 7 but 69 gave it a 1.

Boicott?

If those 69 are american it very well might be draging the US votes down.

I understand not following a film, it's happened to me quite often, but a 1?

When I saw the topic title, I thought you were going to talk about Americans voting down the film due to it beign anti-capital punishment. I think that's what's happened.

ETA: I just watched "The Prestige" and out of curiosity I checked the user ratings. The lowest? women over 45.
237 of them gave that movie a 1. What the hell is going on here!?!

It appears that people who want to downvote movies, register as female>45, because this is the group that normally register the least on IMDB so they have more voting power per vote.
Thus alot of 'foreign' movies (I hate this term but anyway) have many downvotes from females>45, either to make the movie seem less popular, but usually to keep it out of the IMDB top-250.

Horrible practice, but really not much you can do about it.
