Remake?

I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this may work:

For the Liz and Dick story, Brangelina and Matt Damon

For the Rod Taylor/Maggie Smith story (my personal fave), Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet

For the Orson Welles story, Jack Nicholson, with Cameron Diaz as the girl.

and get Judi Dench to play Margaret Rutherford's role.

And, of course, the script would have to be updated (NO WAY would there be fretting about bringing a gun to the airport, because he'd be detained before he even got in).

You know its funny, I watched it again on TCM late the other night and I got to thinking about a remake too. I like your suggestions for the Taylor/Smith and Welles and the girl storyline, but I think Brangelina and Damon are too lightweight. If you think about it, Burton was playing slightly older than his years. And remember the film was sold on the gimmick that that Taylor and Burton were just together then. I dont care for either for them much but how about Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones? For the Rutherford role, just for continuity, how about Dame Maggie Smith?

Now then, that just leaves Louis Jordan. Given that Michael Douglas is no spring chicken, how about Jean Reno?

I dont know if you're from the UK, but we have a spanking new state of the art terminal opening at Heathrow next March. What better way to promote the place than to set a star studded Grand Hotel-like movie there?

I'm not sure that the fog would work as a plot device anymore to strand the passengers, but I'm sure something a little more high tech could be introduced.

I actually think the whole idea has got legs. Any producers out there with $100m or so so blow looking for a good idea?

How about Angelina Jolie, Brad PItt, and Jude Law? I feel like he really works best in parts like this.

I agree with ssarag, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas would fit perfectly to the roles of Frances and Paul. :)

I don't know if it's a good idea to bring Dame Maggie Smith to the continuity of this film as the Duchess... I would vote for Judi Dench...

Well, about the rest I'm not sure... Jude Law would be fine for the Marc role, I guess... For Max Buda and Gloria Gritti, I think about John Goodman and Uma Thurman... For Miss Mead I suppose that a brand new actress would be better... the same for Les Mangrum, a new actor...

If someone has other ideas, I think a brainstorming is welcome. :)

Please no remake i'm sick of them, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are no Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. And will never live up to them they were one of a kind may they RIP. And as for Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet in the Maggie Smith, Rod Taylor roles i won't even go there.

No remake - at least not the same story.
**Spoiler alert **
It's dated technologically - internet banking makes 'writing cheques at the last minute', 'midnight phone calls to the banker' irrelevant. The planes not taking off because of a little fog, also an antique limitation. And, as someone else pointed out, the gun in the pocket is also passé, in these terror-stricken days.

Brilliant casting. I've just seen it for the first time and I think your recommended cast would make a corker of a remake.

The young Maggie Smith put me in mind of Elisabeth Moss, of Mad Men.

For that reason, I would pick her for the Miss Meade role.

Ohhhh - that's a great choice!

I haven't read the thread, so forgive me if someone else has already said this, but I don't see how a remake of this movie could work, if it was set in modern times. Nowadays being fogged in wouldn't even have an impact on attending a Board meeting -- between teleconferencing, the internet, texting, cell phones, etc., it wouldn't really be essential for him to physically "sign the document" to close the deal. So much is transacted now via internet, email and wire transfers that at least some of the plot points (such as the guy needing the check to be given to the guy "after banking hours" so he could deposit money to cover it). Who even writes checks anymore, and or has to fly somewhere to sign a document in person, instead of having them scan/email or fax it to him for a signature? So the only plot point that is still valid in today's world would be the woman who is stuck at the airport with her lover while trying to leave her husband.

Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!
