based on Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier + Peter Finch?

I was just reading Vivien Leigh's biographical page here on IMDb and came across this: "Had an affair with actor Peter Finch that nearly ended her marriage to Laurence Olivier. The movie The V.I.P.s (1963) is based on an incident from Leigh's and Olivier's marriage, when she was about to leave him for Finch but Olivier wooed her back." Anyone know if this is true?

It's almost 2 years late, but from what I read, yes. Leigh was trying to leave London with her lover, Peter Finch, but got fogged in at the airport. Olivier was able to get to the airport and stop her from leaving.

Is'nt she supposed to have said at the airport when they both turned up 'which one of you am I ******* tonight? lol, poor Larry, must have been hard for him to put up with her bi-polar. Obviously wore him down in the end

reply

Too bad she was not properly treated for her bi-polarity. She was so beautiful and such a good actress.

You can't be "properly treated" for bi-polar -- You have to want to take treatment. Many avoid treatment, like Stephen Fry, afraid the creativity will disappear with it. I can only reiterate poor, poor Larry -- and to think he brought it on himself by wooing her back!

Yes, but back then they didn't properly understand what bi-polar is or how to treat Vivien's "moods" rather than realizing she suffered from a legitimate illness. I've read biographies on her and Olivier, and in her case, she really was a victim of the times and her circumstances. I understand why Olivier had to leave in the end, but Vivien was the bigger victim overall because she and everyone around her didn't know that there was help to be had. Here was not a case of treatment or creativity.

I'll bet Larry was sorry he got her back. She and Peter Finch would have made an interesting couple.

Better late than never. Still here. Thank you!
