Funny and bright

A very funny movie with a nice enough cast.

I liked it,too. Very funny, and a message for the swinging sixties. No one made Jack Lemmon appear in these "terrible sixties movies." I think the answer, is how much money did he make? He had a family to raise. too.
I saw it when I was in middle school: so did all of my friends on TV(we only had 4 channels back then.) I was flattered when I was compared to Carol Lynley, even without the blonde hair.

I've read that Lemmon didn't like this film, but I thought it was very good.

He made Good Neighbor Sam the next year with the same director, so he couldn't have hated it that much !

Coming off of "Some Like It Hot," "The Apartment," and "Days of Wine and Roses" (Oscar noms for all three) Lemmon realized that "Under the Yum Yum Tree" was well beneath those in quality.

But he was funny, sex was the theme, and "Yum Yum Tree" was a great big giant hit. So he was OK with it.

And that's why he worked with David Swift again, and I think "Good Neighbor Sam" was a big hit, too.

according to Ben Mankiewicz on TCM it wasn't a great big hit at all on its initial release (not a critical hit anyway).

The critics were not a fan of the movie, but the public adored him and I remember a biographer writing that because they loved him, they were prepared to see him in anything. Interesting comment, but in this case, 'Under the Yum Yum Tree' still made lots of money and along with 'Good Neighbor Sam' and 'Irma La Douce', Jack was made the Top Male Box Office Star of 1964.

I personally quite like 'Under the Yum Yum Tree'. It's a cute little movie. I love 'Good Neighbor Sam' more though, of the David Swift movies that Jack did.

Marilyn Monroe: I don't want to be rich. I just want to be wonderful.

Hello, MissSugarKane:

I think "Good Neighbor Sam" is superb; "Under the Yum Yum Tree" is merely very enjoyable. I can see how the critics trashed this film because it really doesn't work thematically, but I found it a pleasant way to while away the afternoon. And I'm grateful that Jack did so many better films than this.

Yes "Good Neighbor Sam" is awesome and the book was also great. Also Fortune Cookie was a great movie. You just can't go wrong with Jack Lemmon.

"Fortune Cookie" is excellent as well. I'm always impressed with the artistry Jack brought to his roles. The men had talent and charm that never failed.

Nice enough cast but Dean Jones doing that Jimmy Stewart voice impersonation throughout the whole film was just a tad annoying. :)
