Love Jack Lemmon...Hated this movie...

I watched this movie last night and knew it was supposed to be funny, but I think I may have laughed only once [the mechanical violins, LOL]. The stuff intended for laughs in this movie just seemed way too forced and labored. After about the 12th time Hogan "sneaked" into Robin's apartment, it just wasn't funny anymore. And the "clueless" Robin was irritating throughout. The attempt at comedy here was way over done. Huge Jack Lemmon fan here and I was really looking forward to seeing this, but this film sucked lemons -- no pun intended. Just IMO.

"I hope she didn't take my attempt to destroy her too seriously."

I thought the movie was pretty good and such, thought not as funny as I thought it would also be.
The only thing I didn't get was the talking cat at the end. It just kind of takes you out of everything and go WTF? Was that the point?

I've only seen Jack Lemmon in The Apartment and Some Like It Hot so I wasn't expecting much from him.

Also, Dean Jones did nothing but remind me of James Stewart. Esepically (Can't spell) that one line where Hougen gives him the flowers by mistake. It was like, "Well, look here mister, you bust in here and give me flowers, etc."
Did anyone else think this?

If you really want to laugh at Jack Lemmon, you should try to catch The Out Of Towners and The Odd Couple. Too funny. And on a more serious note, The Days Of Wine And Roses where he plays the dramatic role of an alcoholic -- his best role ever IMO.

"My date last night was rude and just plain awful...and then he wouldn't even spend the night."

Under the Yum Yum Tree isn't his best by a long shot, IMHO (and probably in lots of others) but I still liked *him* in the movie though - he was still fast-talking, quirky and loveable, and yes, I am a big Jack Lemmon fan so this film is a part of my collection!

Yes, his character is desperate to bed this beautiful woman which was seen as sleazy but the thing with Jack Lemmon is, he is so good an actor that you can't sense that he disliked making a movie - and in my opinion, I can't see any detest towards the movie in any way and believe me, it comes out in lots of actors. And Jack Lemmon didn't like making this movie, as it was once said.

Carol Lynley got on my nerves though...

Marilyn Monroe: I don't want to be rich. I just want to be wonderful.

Agreed. This film was a real yawner. Quite unusual for a film starring Jack Lemmon. He has always been one of my favorite actors. I've seen most of his films and was expecting this to be much better.

Yeah, Dean Jones did a good Jimmy Stewart impression! Ha ha!

This comment is both sad and hilarious:

"I've only seen Jack Lemmon in The Apartment and Some Like It Hot so I wasn't expecting much from him."

For your information, both movies are two of the greatest American films of the post WW II era and Jack Lemmon is one of the greatest actors ever. You "weren't expecting" anything from him? It's kind of like saying, "In science class, I wasn't expecting Einstein to turn in his assignment."

Sheesh.

lol

Or, how 'bout "Secretariat handily won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, so I wasn't expecting much from him in the Belmont Stakes."

reply

Wasn't expecting much from him....LOL.

One of the greatest actors we ever had in comedy and drama.

Well some people only like films with explosions and special effects.

Well about the film, no this is not his best work.

It's OK, not great.

I have to say this is one of Jack's weaker films, but I still enjoyed it. Regardless, his character is more creepy than funny, and the pratfalls seem a desperate attempt to liven up the story. If a movie makes me care for an hour and a half or so, it's not a wasted effort, though this certainly could have been better. 7/10 stars from me.

I just finished the movie now and I loved it!

It's a dreadful movie and I forgot how much I hate it. Never watching it again, ever.
