Tom Jones- a dream?

I finally got it.
Remember the scene early in the movie when Tom is knocked on the head in the tavern, after defending his love for Sadie?
Then, after he recovers, all sorts of wild stuff happens.
I finally realized that either Tom actually DIED from the blow, and what follows is a kind of heaven-hell deal, or, Tom is in a coma from the bonk, and what happens after that is his dreams/ hallucinations.
Agreement?

From reading the book, I don't think that's what's going on. Basically, the crowd at the table overreacted to Tom's injury when they first claimed he was dead. The events that followed were just incredible coincidences which are what made Tom's story worth relating. Although the movie is, if possible, even more fantastical in terms of crazy coincidences than the book, so I can see where it appears to break from reality.
