Well, I thought since this movie (and the play) was really quite excellent, that there should be a message board for it.
So, here we are. The Tom Jones message board.

So glad you started a message board for this great movie. I saw it when it premiered in New York 40 years ago, and it still ranks high in my opinion.
I do believe that some younger people who see this movie today, might not care for it. It was sort of racy for its day, though.
Hugh Griffith was excellent in the role of Squire Western. But we can't forget the great Edith Evans as his sister.
Albert Finney was superb in this film that made him an international star overnight. He was lovable, gorgeous, and charming. Absolute perfection!!!
Just to let you know I am 21 and enjoy this movie and am proud to own it
shareHeh, I just saw this movie for the first time today and loved it. It's not as well known as many of the other Best Picture winners, but it's one of the best, in my opinion.

This is certainly one of the greatest films of the 60's and I remember taking my Sunday school class to go see it! And a few years later I would be reading the book in college.....and living the 60's for all that it was worth (not much as it turned out). This film has a cast of a whole generation of fantastic British film stars, both large (Albert Finney), medium (the great Joan Greenwood) and small (Jack Macgowan). How the British produced such a gang of brilliant, stunning and unbelievable characters is a story that needs to be told. I have watched this film since, and it is as fresh and wonderful as ever. I just wish I could live that day again, watching this movie as a teenager, and knowing that I was seeing something that celebrated an absolute joy by a whole generation of unique and wonderful individuals who had been captured for eternity. What a cast! What a party! These great actors and the tradition of British acting represented here is certainly the greatest creation of all British culture.
shareI think "Tom Jones" is the best film adaptation of a picaresque novel , although it's now fashionable to say that it's dated and it sucks . I also love "Barry Lyndon" , but I'd give Tom Jones the edge because of its superior acting .
shareThis film is an outstanding achievement. The vital elements that make this movie engaging will continue to stand the test of time. Rather than judge it from every angle, give in to the fact that it's still head and shoulders above most 'great' films.
shareI had to study the book for school exams and found it a bit ponderous. I can't recall seeing the film before it came up on a minor British TV channel last night. Good cast, good scenery in a part of England I know well. I thought that the hunting scene went on far too long (and I'm agnostic about hunting, which in England is controversial, as did the eating one.
Overall, I was slightly disappointed, but found the latter part of the film, with Tom in London, entertaining.
