I'm sure it was hot stuff in its day

Today, not so much. There were movies that were groundbreakers in their day that still hold up brilliantly (Bonnie and Clyde, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jaws, Star Wars, etc). Then there are ones like Tom Jones and The Graduate, which have not aged well at all. 1963 was not exactly a great year for English-language movies (particularly in contrast to the previous year) so I'm sure that Tom Jones was the "Best" picture, relatively speaking. But I still prefer the gorgeously stodgy Cleopatra.

I agree. "Tom Jones" is greatly overrated. I find it's relentless attempts to be funny, almost in a Benny Hill-ish manner, and its 1960s style imposed on the 18th century, to be unwatchable. There was a 1997 television miniseries starring Max Beesley and Samantha Morton that was far superior.
