Not many films out there about cats, are there?

Aside from this Disney title, the only other housecat-themed movie I can think of is "That Darned Cat" starring Hayley Mills as the cat-owner.

Any others?

reply

A couple of other ones are both from Disney: The Aristocats and The Cat from Outer Space. Oh, another animated one is Gay Purr-ee but it is not a Disney movie. Judy Garland and Robert Goulet did the voices and Chuck Jones did the animation. It's been so long since I've seen it that I can't remember very much about it except that we named our cat Mewsette after the Judy Garland cat.

You're right, there aren't many movies about cats. I know of one, "Harry & Tonto", starring Art Carney as Harry, a retired man living in New York City who moves to Los Angeles with his cat, Tonto, after their apartment is torn down. I've only seen it twice, once in the 70's and again in June, 2006, after buying a copy of it from deepdiscount.com. I can't remember much about it but it's okay as far as movies go. I need to watch it again before I can say anything about it. Art Carney won the oscar for best actor in 1974 for his role as Harry.

I want to be the kind of person my cat thinks I am.

reply

There is a movie called "The Adventures of Milo and Otis", about a cat named Milo and his friend, a dog named Otis. I've not seen the movie but I just bought a copy so I can't say what it is like at this point.

One interesting thing about the 'ALF' television show is that the family owned a cat (named Lucky) instead of a dog. Hardly any other television shows have ever included cats as pets, because cats apparently aren't as easy to control and/or script as are dogs.

reply

There have been several other TV families with pet cats; foremost of these is the origional 1960s series "The Munsters", which featured the occasional appearance of a black cat which seemed to be Grandpa's pet. (Well, it was more or less Grandpa's pet - he was the one who was always picking it up and stroking it!) This sweet-looking kitty, who roared like a lion instead of meowed, was featured in the series' pilot.
Other television shows of the 1960s and 70s which featured at least one on-screen appearance of a pet cat included:
"Batman": After Catwoman apparently fell to her death at the end of the episode "Better Luck Next Time", Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson adopted her pet long-haired black cat and brought it back to Wayne Manor; the episode ended with Aunt Harriet complaining that the cat had stolen a lobster that was meant for dinner. Also, the villainess Marsha, Queen of Diamonds owned a pet marmalade cat named Circe.
"The Addams Family": At the beginning of the episode in which the children's beloved Grandma Frump - played by Margaret Hamilton in a very obvious resurrection of Elmira Gulch! - comes to visit in honor of her birthday, she's carrying a sack that she's about to present to Wednesday and Pugsley. The contents: a rabid pet cat. Her comment: "Well, I had to bring them SOMETHING!"
"The Brady Bunch": Another marmalade, belonging to the girls; after the first episode. it simply vanished from the script and was never mentioned again!
"The Patty Duke Show": In one episode, Patty hides a stray kitten in her room; it's ultimately discovered (of course), and the Lane family finally decides to keep it. I'm not sure whether this kitten made a subsequent appearance on the show.
Also, don't forget Data's loyal marmalade, Spot, on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and Sabrina's Salem on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch". Plus, Ellie Mae owned at least one unnamed cat among her legion of critters on "The Beverly Hillbillies". And then there was "The Flintstones"' Baby Puss; "Looney Tunes"' Sylvester actually belonged to Granny, the sweet(and hard-hitting) old lady who was the owner of Tweety Bird...and, on "Davey and Goliath", Davey's sister Sally acquired a kitten over the course of a suspense-filled two-parter!

I can think of a few more: The 90s remake of "That Darn Cat!", "The Cat From Outer Space", "The Terror of Sheba", "Harry and Tonto", "Ghost Cat", "Cat's Eye", "The Adventures of Milo and Otis", "The Aristocats" (cartoon), "Oliver and Company" (cartoon), "Puss In Boots" (cartoon), "Cats Don't Dance" (cartoon), "Felix the Cat" (cartoon), "Gay Purr-ee" (cartoon - excellent!!), "Tom and Jerry: The Movie" (cartoon), "Garfield: The Movie" (live/CGI), "Puss in Boots" (a weird, live-action 1960s thing), "Fritz the Cat" and "The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat" (X-rated cartoons), and "A Little French Romance" (live-action X-rated, with real cat co-stars!). Other movies in which live cats have appeared include: "Dr. Dolittle" (original), "Dr. Dolittle 1 & 2 " (Eddie Murphy), "When a Stranger Calls" (2006 remake), "101 Dalmatians" (live-action), "Pleasantville", "Girls! Girls! Girls!" and "Frankie and Johnny" (Elvis Presley), "Batman: The Movie" (1966), "Stuart Little", "You Never Can Tell", "Willard" (original) "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"; "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", "Big Fish", "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation", "Heidi" (every live version!), "Animal Farm" (live-action), "Girl, Interrupted", "The Fly" (both original and remake), "Pretty Baby", "Logan's Run", "The Godfather", "Bell, Book, and Candle", "The Incredible Journey", "Homeward Bound 1 & 2", "Whistle Down The Wind", "The Incredible Shrinking Man", "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery", "The Spy Who Shagged Me", "Austin Powers in Goldmember"; "J.T.", "Whiskers", "Catwoman", "Babe", "Racing Stripes", "Superman" (Christopher Reeve), "The Black Cat", "The Wizard of Oz", "The Snake Pit", and "This Gun For Hire". Also, a number of Charlie Chaplin films included scenes with cats and kittens.

And then there was Morris the cat who did a bunch of commercials back in the '70's.

Kevin Hooks and J'anette Dubois (Willona on Good Times and the singer of the Jeffersons' theme) starred in JT. You can find copies of this on www.ioffer.com from time to time.

Other cat movies I can think of include Cats and Dogs and Sleepwalkers

reply

I would love to find "J.T", a very little known made-for-tv movie I remember from when I was a kid..

reply

I always loved a movie called "ffolkes". Roger Moore loved his cat more than people. He received a basket of kittens in the end as a reward for his service.

reply

Too bad there wasn't a cat in Charlotte's Web. I really liked the way that film gave interesting personalities to the other animals in the barn, including sheep, a rat, and of course, the title character: a big garden spider!

reply

There is a small company that is selling JT starring Kevin Hooks and J'anette Dubois (who played Willona on Good Times). I believe it is listed on the boards for JT on IMDB.

Good Luck!

reply

Go to www.ioffer.com They have had it there for sale.

reply

I believe there is a Stephen King film about cats. I think it is Sleepwalkers and there is one cat in particular that is the hero of the story if I remember correctly. I have only seen it once and being an animal lover, didn't care for it.

reply

OK um... I think they were talking about films FEATURING cats, not films that just have a cat in them. And where in The Wizard of Oz do you see a cat?? There are NO cats in the Wizard of Oz, either in the book or the movie.

He,he! As usual wikipedia has a page on the very subject. I was looking at dog films v cat films as subject matter after watching an episode of "The League of Gentlemen". Google for "Dougal Siepp's Cat Theatre" (it was actually live cat theatre v dog films to be truthful)
The wikipedia page is obviously incomplete for there is no mention of "the three lives...."

Actually, there is a Siamese cat in the Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy and the Wizard are getting ready to leave in the balloon, the cat meows and Toto barks and jumps out of the balloon. Dorothy gets out to get Toto and the balloon takes off.

But yes, most of the movies mentioned are not featuring cats. They may simply have a cat somewhere in a scene.

reply

since your including animated movies and TV series there is "Kiki's Delivery Service" and the old Saturday morning cartoons "Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse" and "Top Cat"

reply

I'll add "General Sterling Price" as John Wayne's lazy cat in "True Grit."

reply

Yes, Yes. But I think we mean where cats are the main characters, not just somebodies pet.

reply

Don't forget, Disney also made "The Cat from Outer Space."...

reply

Although there are two dogs in the film too, what about The Incredible Journey? Another kiddy film that had me blubbering all the way through! I've always been sensitive....*sniffs*

reply

Nobody remembers "Rhubarb" the 1951 movie about a cat that inherits a baseball team? Did I mention It's about to be released on DVD? (Jul 1 according to Amazon.com) The cat in Rhubarb is also a yellow tabby.

reply

Rhubarb is a good name for a cat. Especially one that's reddish-colored.

reply

Actually, "rhubarb" is baseball slang for a minor altercation between the players of opposing teams during a game. Sort of a low-level "brawl."

I don't remember the name of it, but there was a movie in the early nineties about three kittens who accidentally go down a stream. It was a Milo and Otis "copycat" movie.

reply

There need to be more movies about cats. Especially beautiful ginger cats.

reply

Now there is a great movie about a ginger cat, "A Streetcat Named Bob" True story about a real cat, with Bob playing himself, as a younger cat.

from russia with love: blofeld's white persian cat (apparently blofeld's cat appears in other bond films)

the day after tomorrow: jason robards' character has a cat

the hunchback of notre dams (1939 version): frollo's many cats

bolt: the black female cat

catwoman (with halle berry): sadly enough, this was a cgi cat (lazy people)!

the great muppet caper: there's a muppet cat in the happiness hotel

breakfast at tiffany's: holly golightly's signature cat (don't know if this was mentioned before)

the march of the wooden soldiers: cat & the fiddle

one missed call: meagan good's cat, who unfortunately "gets it" in the beginning

meet the parents and meet the fockers: robert de niro's cat

national lampoon's christmas vacation: aunt bethany's cat

can't think of any others off the top of my head right now, but i know what the op is saying -- that cats might make appearances in many films, but there aren't many films at all out there that are actually ABOUT cats. i love cats and i understand - so many darned dog movies!! i love dogs and all but enough is enough..i think there really do need to be more movies FEATURING cats. i mean, i have seriously been thinking how great it would be for "hotel for cats" to be made as a sequel to hotel for dogs!

reply

I'm trying to finish a book about my last cat... it will be very sad, but I hope to see it made into a movie someday. It's called "The Little Kitty"

reply

Don't forget the animated TV series, "Top Cat."

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

"Felidae" is an amazing animated film with a nearly all-cat cast. Imagine film noir with felines. This is NOT for children!
IMDb review:
Felidae is a noir cartoon about cats and murder, based on the best-selling novel by the same name. It is very rare and unique in its genre - an animated animal picture with some of the most disturbing and dark subjects in film. A serial killer slaying fellow cats in gruesome manners when they are on heat with the wrong race. There are visions of hell, animal experimentation, dead mutilated bodies, sex scenes and race purification - very much like Germany was during the Nazi regime. It starts out as a plot similar to Basic Instinct, has a human-like tone just as Watership Down had, gruesome murder notions and Satan worshiping somewhat akin to Angel Heart and a few tragic characters like in Apocalypse Now.

There's The General in "Stephen King's Cat's Eye", which gets to have a fantastic battle with a troll after passing through a couple of other stories on the way to rescuing a little girl (Drew Barrymore).

I haven't seen this one: Murder She Purred: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery.

Sadly, cats are focused on more often in horror films, where they generally are baaaaad news. Cats are pivotal in such movies as "Eye of the Cat" (1969) and "The Uncanny" (1977).

How about some big cats? Born Free!

reply

For me at least, that's not the same at all. I want to see cats and kittens in films. There are many about the big cats, but... Sorry, but that's not the same for me or anywhere near it. *sigh*

Meanwhile, I've been watching Mean Little Kitty aka Mean Kitty videos on YouTube, plus lots of "talking" cats. Maybe these people should get together and make kitty cat movies!

Sorry, you are right. I love cats and I know what you mean. It's just I also fondness for the big cats, too.

Don't forget the animated movie, "Cats Don't Dance", voiced by Scott Bakula and Jasmine Guy, Stephen King's, "Cat's Eye", starring a young Drew Barrymore, where a cat is the common thread through a series of human misadventures and "Pet Semetary", where the family cat is killed and then brought back to murderous life after being buried in a local cemetery by generations of neighborhood children.

And a shout out to my beloved sable Bombay, Igor, who went from being a pampered NYC apartment-dwelling house cat to being a prolific suburban neighborhood "warlord", bearing the scars from more than a dozen fights and sire to a dozen look-alike kittens, before finally being put down after a really bad battle. I miss my furball.

Truth is, everybody is going to hurt you; you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for
