The spider

Would anyone like to give me their view on the symbolisation of the spider and Margaret's death?

reply

I wish I could. Can you?? Maybe it represented some kind of "darkness" which enveloped her [life].

reply

Thanks for your reply, my interpretation is: The spider symbolised death, he was trying to protect Margaret from the spider but as it fell to the floor he took his eyes off her and she died. That's why when he next saw the spider he was angry and crushed it. The blood from the crushed spider linked in with the blood coming out of Margaret's mouth as she passed away. ?????

Two widows just died - he is putting the widow (the black widow spider) to rest.

Not that it's related to the movie, but the idea that daddy longlegs are at all poisonous is an urban myth, dispatched on the TV show "mythbusters".

reply

Finally, I could saw this movie three days ago, on TV.
So I'm not the one who have noticed this macabre scene.
It seems that when the spider falls, the life of Margaret ends, perhaps also Frank had think that, so he killed the animal with anger.
I was displeased when I saw blood come out from her mouth!

reply

I also thought the spider symbolized the spectre of death originally. In retrospect though, I can see where it might also simply represent her. He crushes the spider same as his torments led to her demise.

Could go either way. Actually, I still favor the death metaphor, with his squishing blow showing just how impotent his machismo was in the end.

reply

Don't quote me, but I heard Freudians say spiders symbolize females.

"Two more swords and I'll be Queen of the Monkey People." Roseanne

bobchoda, agree here, it cant be forgotten that the audience does plainly see a man smashing a spider, thus its first meaning would of course just been the rage he had from such a lose.

Absolutly trememndous film, harris, what a guy

Perfection in darkness

I think the spider was there to scare the living crap out of people already very sleepy from staying up long enough to see to the end of this no doubt great but dreadfully gloomy film. (The only British spider I know of which is that size and that scary is quite rare and only lives in marshland. Unnecessary.) Is it very crass and wrong that at the end when he's standing in the doorway yelling "MARGARET!!!" to no reply, I started wondering if it was the inspiration for the shopkeeper in Little Britain...? Yes, it is, sorry. But I am very tired. And facing a restless night full of massive spider nightmares. Still, thoughts of Richard Harris all mooded-up in a rugby kit covered in mud might temper that... Boycott Astroturf!! Night everyone xx

reply

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of Little Britain when he started yelling "Margaret!"

reply

There are no black widow spiders in Wakefield, England!

Maybe he just squashed the spider because he was angry and frustrated at her death.

reply

He probably did just squash the spider because he was angry and frustrated at Margaret's death. Although I like to think Anderson chose a spider rather than a, ladybird say, for some reason!

For me the spider symbolised Margaret and not death. I love the way Anderson used the spider and feel that it is particularly relevant since Frank fears women, and especially fears his lack of control over his love/family life. He did not love Margaret, but was in love with the family ideal that she could offer him, and she became an object of this feeling and thereafter an opponent who needed to be conquered. The oppressing and crushing fist that comes down to destroy the spider shows the way that Frank deals with his fears: in a confrontational and aggressive manner.

Granddaddy long leg spiders are not poisonous and they can bite humans. That is all. LOL.

!!

Love it.

Everyday's my wedding day.

reply

I didn't think of Little Britain...I thought of Brando yelling "Stella...STELLA!!!" in Streetcar. The resemblance between the two actors was uncanny and I think Harris copped alot of his performance style from Marlon.

reply

It could symbolize that his aggression leads to destroying everything he encounters. The spider was a life that he decided to kill for no other reason except his own anger and aggression. Just something I thought of.

I would like to read the spider as somehow relating to Ovid's telling of the myth of Arachne, the mortal weaver who boasted she was a greater weaver than the goddess Minerva. There's only one catch...Margaret is nothing like the mythical Arachne. Arachne was something of a super-mortal who overstepped her boundaries with the gods. (Frank is much more this role...) However, in the myth, Arachne realizes that she has been out of line with the gods and chooses to kill herself. Minerva takes pity on Arachne and saves her, changing her into a spider. So spiders are sometimes interpretted as an escape or a reincarnation into a second chance; a kind of redemption granted by the gods. More significantly, perhaps, it is often considered bad luck in Western cultures to kill a spider because they represent Arachne. So Frank killing the spider might more accurately reflect his ongoing bad luck and bad choices.

reply

Wait...the spider appeared to fall to the floor. After Margaret died, it was back at "fist height" for the kill? Could Franks grief-riddled mind have been acting up? Was there a spider at all? After all, he did hear a floorboard creak (in an otherwise empty house) after calling out Margarets name afterward.

Well, Spiders webs trap prey, she trapped her emotions, and the appearance of webs as a pattern could resemble a flies pattern which took the life of her late husband

I too thought of both 'Little Britain' and 'A Streetcar Named Desire' when watching this film and hearing Richard Harris yelling for Margaret. In certain scenes Richard Harris actually reminded me very much of Brando- I think maybe that was he was cast in this film- a sort of British 'A Streetcar Named Desire' where he played the brute very nicely. As for the spider many people are looking deeper into it than I did- to me it just reminded me of what Margaret said "your crushing me" or something to that effect- in the end he crushes the spider.

reply

My opinion is that killing the spider was something he could control.
He could not control Margaret, could not stop her from dying but whether the spider lived or not - that was his down to him and he liked being in control didnt he?
Plus he was angry of course.

reply

Maybe the spider was Eric.

reply

That was hilarious.
