heroin addiction

Is this the first time a film has really dealt with heroin addiction? It seems rather bold for its time.

It isn't the first film to deal with heroin addiction, because that honor would probably go to Otto Preminger's 1955 classic "The Man With The Golden Arm", starring Frank Sinatra (Feel free to correct me). However, this is definitely an earlier film dealing with heroin addiction.

There is a heroin addict in Easy Street by Charlie Chaplin, made in the 1910s. But it's only on the screen briefly, so I don't know if you'd count it.
