It just proves how versatile Kurosawa was, something that somehow just gets overlooked at times, because of his famous samurai movies. Heck, STRAY DOG from 1949, was essentially the first buddy cop movie (and superior than those that have followed).

try watching a Korean movie called Memories of murder from 2003. Probably the best movie from the past 10 year would definatley be on par with High and Low which i consider probably the greatest crime story ever made as well and on par with kurosawa best works.

Memories of Murder was fantastic, as was a film I just saw, it was Argentinian, I believe, called "The Secrets in Their Eyes." The procedural stuff is excellent and its so much more than a crime drama.

Both movies are remarkable crime dramas. Just goes to show how rewarding it can be to look outside Hollywood for Saturday night entertainment!

Also Memories of Murder had the most striking ensemble staging i had seen after High and Low.
