The new German Region 2 DVD...a report.

I have just received my new Region 2 DVD of "Lancelot and Guinevere" (or "Sword of Lancelot", as it says on the print used for this transfer) and, although the sound is excellent and the 2.35:1 image is 16 x 9 anamorphically enhanced and crystal clear, the whole lot is spoiled by it having a slight horizontal shake on the image throughout, particularly noticeable in non-action scenes. This could have been caused either by a fault in the authoring of the DVD, or by the celluloid film (either negative or positive print) shrinking slightly after nearly fifty years, or by a fault on the telecine machine used to do the transfer. The fault is more noticeble on a bigger screen than a smaller one, but it does tend to hurt the eyes after a while. So bear this in mind before deciding to buy this DVD. It looks like we still await a proper wide screen DVD of this film. However, as the shake can't be seen when the image is paused, the image is clear enough to make some excellent frame captures from it.
