I didn't cry, but I think it's very sad. It would have been cool if Arthur took the squirrel home for a pet.

Wow! I honestly thought I was the only one who was so affected by this scene... I was always embarrassed that I found it so sad, so I'm glad others feel the same way!

I remember when I was little, I would fight back tears as Wart leaves the girl squirrel crying... Even though I found her irritating while she was chasing him. Once he turned back into a boy... It broke my heart! I thought maybe I was just being sensitive as a child, but I watched this again today with the boy I nanny for and found myself nearly crying again!

Definetly the saddest scene in this film. (Although, there weren't that many of them, anyway).
I suppose it contains some kind of message, but I gotta admit I can't quite figure it out.
(Be careful about falling in love with squirrels?)

The message is clear, Merlin says it: "Love is the greatest force on earth".

I agree about that scene being heartwrenching. This isn't my favorite Disney film (though I like it), but that scene moved me emotionally more than any other scene in any other Disney film. It didn't bother me so much as a child, but I saw the movie recently as an adult and I wanted to cry myself (but didn't). I suppose it was made all the sadder because the female squirrel had been so cheerful throughout the rest of the scene.

I actually felt incredibly depressed when they ran off and left the squirrel by herself. I tried to enjoy the rest of the film, which was funny up to that point, but it was ruined for me. There was this sad feeling inside of me that I just couldn't kick.

On the other hand, I love that fat granny squirrel! The sounds she makes are priceless! I love it when Merlin chases her up a tree and she looks back and goes "Ooooooooh!" That's just great stuff.

It's on channel 5 right now. I just saw the squirrel bit and yes it is really sad. She saved him and then it was so sad that she started crying. Why did they have to put that in the film? I hope she ends up being happy though.

reply

Why the have put this in the Film? As Walt Disney himself said: "For every laugh, there should be a tear".
Disney always take children quite serious, and so he made not all in his movies only light and joyful. He often add some lessons to his movies. Sometimes there are very harsh (like in "Bambi"), sometimes a little bit lesser sad, but always to remember and think about.
IMHO this is one of the points, that the old Disney movies made unforgettable. The new movies like "Madagascar", "Ice Age" etc. are all quite funny too, but fast saw by children for a hour of joy... and than fast forgotten.
If you are grown up with the Disney classics, you will never forget it. Not the funny scenes, not the sad scenes. The contrast between fun and sadness makes it!

"What happened mother? Why did we all run?"
"Man... was in the forest."

They still should not have put it in the film

Haha. I'm 18 years old and a male. To this day it's the only scene from the movie I really remember.

I watched the movie all the time when I was really little and I always felt really bad for that squirrel. It's nice to see that everyone else felt the same way...apparently my brothers at that age were alot less sensitive than me and really didn't care at all.

reply

I never cried but I always felt really bad for the female squirrel.

reply

Yeah, it's just so sad. Poor girl squirrel. But I almost feel bad for the older lady squirrel too, but she became more angry than sad, I think. But she could cried afterwards too, who knows?

reply

I did. It's Just so sad to see some one who loves another get heartbroken like that.

Especially if it's a soft,cute,furry animal!!!

reply

She'll love again, people, she's a young, hot squirrel!
