I now understand all this.

I understand all this with Adam and his sister Eileen and Eileens present fiancee Russ and and Mike and Mona. All it is is this. Adam is a pilot and finally has a Sunday off so he can be with Mona at his place all to himself, finally without his pilot career getting in the way. However Adam gets a surprise visit from his sister Eileen because she is unsure of herself about her present relationship with Russ and needs his help. In Eileens and Russ's relationship, Russ hasn't shown any love to Eileen in a very long time and it left her confused, that was before she took the train from Albany to New York City.

However Adam had plans to make love and have you know what(the birds and the bees) in his apartment with Mona but Eileen showed up so Adam and Mona needed another place to crash at so it couldn't be her place because of her present roomate but when a pilot friend of Adams says his place is available, Eileen shows up saying that Mr. Drysdale has an emergency on call flight for him. So he and Mona have to go to the airport, but when Morgan shows up last minute confusion that screws up Adams and Monas relationship happens when Mona boards the plane. Then Mona is angry in Pittsburgh but Adam doesn't give up and after all those crazy confusions the only way Adam could save his relationship was to marry her. He would have had her on that flight to Denver if he hadn't have slipped on that stupid banana peel.

Now as far as Eileen goes she had to get on a Fifth Avenue Bus to go to the Rockefeller Skating Rink to let her brother Adam know that Mr. Drysdale was looking for him for an emergency flight but Morgan would have shown up if that 3 year old son of his hadn't have locked himself in the bathroom.

As far as Mike goes she met him on the bus on her way to see Adam and the two coats collided into each other. Then they both just happened to go to have coffee at the restuarant in Rockefeller Center then second time they met on the bus he decides to take her boat rowing in Central Park and after that relax at Adams apartment.

Plus the reason she wanted Mike to make love to her despite the factor that was engaged to Russ with problems in it was because she was starved for love because lately until Russ shows up later he was neglecting Eileen. However long time after Eileen realizes despite the factor that they have only known each other for one day falling in love just happened to both of them and lately before Eileens trip down to NY to visit her brother Adam, Russ wasn't doing much in that months time.

The point of this movie is that love and relationships between many two parties are all different and lots of them have confusions.

btw - they didn't 'happen' to go get a cup of coffee, they purposefully met there to settle the score on how much she owed him for the jacket repair.

Um, no actually. That's not quite it.

Yes, brother Adam wanted a day off to enjoy making love with his girlfriend Mona. And those plans were interrupted by the visit from his sister Eileen. They (Adam and Mona) then spent most of the rest of the day in a farcical dance of trying to be together and being kept apart by goofy circumstances. He married her in the end because he finally realized that he no longer wanted that carefree bachelor lifestyle; he just wanted Mona.

Eileen's relationship with Russ is where the OP's description goes a little off track. They were not engaged when she came to NY. They were dating. And they had broken up, not because he was inattentive but because he wanted her to have sex with him and she'd been holding out till marriage. When she first came to town she wasked her brother if that's just the way it was now, in which case perhaps she shouldn't be holding out. He said no, lots of people waited, and then lied and said that he didn't sleep with his girlfriend. In the course of the day she meets Mike on the bus. They go to lunch together but she leaves a note for him and slips away after he tells her a slightly dirty joke (which she had told Adam was the first sign of when a guy was going to expect certain things of her (yes, sex). They bump into each other yet again and this time they end up back at the apartment because it suddenly starts raining. She had no intention of getting involved with him until she saw Mona's underwear hanging in the closet and realized that her brother had lied to her. At that point she decided that if getting her into bed was what any man was going to want from her, she might as well get it over with and lose her virginity to Mike, who she proceeded to try to seduce. She ends up telling him she's a virgin first though and he no longer wants to have sex with her because he doesn't want to be responsible for deflowering a virgin.

It is at this point that Russ shows up, mistakes Mike for Adam and the hijinks ensue. Russ had come to propose to her because after she stood up to him and dumped him for his treatment of her, he decided she was right and wanted to come make it up to her. By this time though, Eileen and Mike were falling for each other and the outcome was inevitable. The emphasis was on the comedy but there was also a cute little love story in there, for both couples come to think of it. And I loved Mike locking her in the bedroom so he could tell her he loved her but they wouldn't be tempted to have sex. Or rather trying to lock her in.

Sunday in New York is one of my all time favorite older romantic comedies. It can't be updated for today's trends but I find the characters endearing and the comedy funny so for me it's a great one to settle in with, especially on a rainy day.

I think that she suddenly decided to seduce Mike in order to prove a point to her brother. He had lied to her about having sex. I think she felt that if he could have pre-marital sex, so could she. I agree with your explanation, too.
