'Retreat, soldier!'

I love the part in the film when Jackie Gleason, as M/Sgt. Slaughter, barks "Retreat, soldier!" at a GI who's failed to stop and salute the flag as it was lowered for the day. It perfectly illustrated Slaughter's pride in his country and his professionalism as a soldier.

I agree...but it was "RETREAT, soldier." One of my favorite parts.

"Retreat" is correct. It's a bugle call that signals the end of the official day:

It was indeed "Retreat," not "Colors." My mistake!
