Overlooked

This is a wonderful character study. It is so good I am amazed it got made with such big stars. Although old enough I didn't see it when it came out and I assume it was not boffo at the box office.

Not to be missed by serious film fans.

No, Edwards didn't direct Soldier In The Rain. (He was too busy directing Days Of Wine And Roses followed by The Pink Panther at the time.) Edwards wrote and produced it only. Soldier was directed by Ralph Nelson, who also directed these:

Embryo (1976)
Soldier Blue (1970)
...tick...tick...tick... (1970)
Charly (1968)
Counterpoint (1968)
Duel at Diablo (1966)
Once a Thief (1965)
Father Goose (1964)
Fate Is the Hunter (1964)
Soldier in the Rain (1963)
"The Farmer's Daughter" (1963) (TV Series)
Lilies of the Field (1963)
Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)

I AGREE. GLEASON IS DEFINITELY UNDERRATED AS A DRAMATIC ACTOR.I GUESS WITH ALL THE T.V. HE DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO DO MANY MOVIES.

This movie didn't do well at the book office, but it was not the fault of the movie makers or the actors. It had the misfortune of being released on the week after President Kennedy's assasination. No one was in the mood to do ANYTHING, and most stayed tuned in to their televisions and stayed at home. (Remember how we all felt on and after September 11th, 2001?) It remains one of my favorites , great acting, story, and soundtrack. I hope it has a U.S. DVD release at some point in the future.

"I assume it was not boffo at the box office."

- wiiiindy.

It was released a week AFTER the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Not too many people in America were in the mood for a movie, then. People SHOULD try to see it on DVD, now. If you have the money, buy it, I assure you that you'll LOVE IT! A small treasure!

"You can't HANDLE the truth!" Jack Nicholson, "A Few Good Men."

I saw this movie while on a pass from basic training at Lackland AFB. I thought it might be a good movie because I knew about marching in the rain and I fell under the heading "soldier". However I didn't get much out of it at the time, being sort of in shock yet about having signed my life away like that. I'd like to see it again, for the first time.

I saw this movie when it came out. I was thirteen. I enjoyed it then and have watched it every chance I get when I see it is on TV. It was just on TCM. It is one of my all-time favorites. I love the Pepsi machine and the little tune it plays when the bottle comes out. A great gag!

A couple other Steve McQueen films from that period in his career that are worth seeing are Baby the Rain Must Fall and The War Lover.

McQueen thought that the film would not do well at the box office, and he was proved right, but not for the reasons he supposed. The movie opened on November 27, 1963, five days after Predident Kennedy's asassination, and nobody was in the mood to go to the movies.

This movie is probably more enjoyable today for the iconic cast and the marvelous sound track by Henry Mancini.
