The fact that they became boyfriend and girlfriend was really strange. Not just the age, everything about it was strange. She is drop dead perfect high school girl and he was fat and in his forties, he was very mean to her twice, then he was very disinterested and aloof. It was just bizarre.

Something else I can't figure out is why Eustis (Steve McQueen) didn't want her for himself, but instead introduced her to Maxwell. Also, why wouldn't Bobby Jo be attracted to Eustis? He was a bumpkin, but he did have a heart of gold.
