What was Edmund thinking?

Edmund of Cornwall has got it made; King Arthur's right hand man, Katherine's husband-to-be, plenty of land, handy with a lance, nothing to do but boss the serfs around. And what does he do? Sell out Arthur to the Saxons so he can be king and inherit all the headaches Arthur has as king.
Reminds me of the old Republic serials where American thugs hire out to aliens (Purple Monster Strikes) or Japanese spies (Masked Marvel). What exactly do these thugs think is going to happen to them if the aliens/Japanese are successful and take over the USA? Well, it happens to Edmund!

Ha good point. It was a strange and highly risky plan. Could he not have married Arthur's daughter and became king? They seemed to be getting along well together and she knew her father respected him. He seemed to have been pretending to be the civil and courteous gentleman to get into Arthur's good graces and then when he has it all made invites the Saxons to attack when he could possibly have been king anyway. Also was planning to usurp before Arthur had given him the sword and told him to remain a leak servant-the idiot.

He seemed a bit reserved about getting his hands dirty but this didn't prevent his incompetence.
