the performances veer between campy and good

especially the lead actor but all the "inmates" i could say that about. the dated, campy quality to all the acting and the movie really...it's such a dated, over the top look at mental illness but somehow it still works for me. in the films, context there's many good performances. it's a solid film though i can understand why others might not like it. the story is dated and trite and you know what's going to happen to the lead character pretty much from the get go.

Indeed they are...But don't think for a minute that it isn't entirely as directed. Fuller's irony is all-pervading in this movie, which might be considered his best. I really don't think I can agree that it's dated. And you must respect how much, much further he can go with his material on a shoestring budget than if it were an 'A' list studio picture.
