I Don't understand...

Ok, in Old Yeller, Sam looked like a yellow lab like his dad. How does a puppy that looks like a lab turn into a black hound?

you know i dont get it either, i put a bit of thought into it and didnt come up with much, because they showed old yellers pup as an adult in the old one and he was definatly a Lab of some sort. the only explanation i could come up with was that in the first one they showed the dog yeller had puppies with (i think her name was miss prissy) and she looked like she could have been part hound. so its possible that yeller could have a houndish looking pup, but definatly not a pure bred hound like savage sam clearly is. lol and this entry proves i have no life

I don't recall if they called the puppy "Sam" in "Old Yeller", but in any case, this movie doesn't mention Old Yeller as the sire of Sam. Which is good, because there is no way this BLUE tick coonhound (he's not black) has any of that oversized-Lab-looking (they claim he is some rare breed) type in him. Not at all.

It was a mistake. In the movie of "Old Yeller" they had the puppy look like Yeller. Five years later they made "Savage Sam" and got a dog fitting the book description which looked nothing like the dog in the earlier movie.

Yeah Sam is a mix breed that in perfect writing land only resembles one side. Unless somehow Yeller had dormant coonhound in his own DNA to pass on. I'm no expert on dog DNA, but someone else might know if that actually makes any sense or Gipson just liked both types of dogs lol.

Gamefaqs has a far worse population than IMDB
