I didn't hate the movie but....****SPOILERS** **

....I sure had a lot of problems with it!

1). "James Jerome" looked just like "Rex Black" only with blond hair! I mean, C'mon...!?!??!?!?!

2). The ending......did he (Rex) live or die? They never covered him when they put him on the boat so I am assuming he was alive.

3). The ending.....if he did live then he and Stella went to jail for insurance fraud. If he died, then just Stella went to jail for insurance fraud.

4). So what happened with the insurance man/painter. All kind of silly.

I didn't think Laurence Harvey's acting was all that bad. He played a pretty good slime ball and Lee Remick was as cute as a button!

he died, the last one liner/zinger makes that obvious. remick and the insurance guy broke up as far as we know (not definitive though). #1 didnt bother me

- When Bates was working for the insurance company, he probably didn't see any photographs of Rex Black, so he would not recognize him.

- and yes, Rex dies at the end

And we are led to believe that Bates was on to them which, of course, he wasn't, so there was no reason for him to think/suspect Rex is actually James. Bates character was just a small fry in the insurance co., not happy with the job and moved on with his life taking a job in a totally different field - unlike someone such as E.G. Robinsons character in 'Double Indemnity'.
I came to this thread wondering same as the op - did he die ?
It was typical in movies to indicate a character has died by either pulling the sheet/blanket over the decease face/head and/or closing the eye lids (N/A here). The one officer did say 'I'm sorry ...' to Stella and this is typical when someone dies so maybe they thought they covered that base with that line. Nothing says 'muerto' though like the blanket over the head or the closing of the eyelids

The police officer also asked her if she had known him long (past tense). That's the key line that tells us he's dead.
