severely underated and overlooked?

My question is- do you think this film has been unfairly overlooked and ultimately been ignored in Welles Catalog for a particular reason?

Is this Welles forgotten masterpiece, or a film not worth remembering?

I picked it up for a dollar at wal-mart. I don't think you get any more underated than that. Its a far superior film than most of my collection most of which I paid quite a bit more for.

I also got my copy of "The Trial" on DVD at Wal-Mart for a buck--and to add insult to injury, it has to share the disc with a second feature: "Escape From Sobibor" starring Rutger Hauer.

That is also a good movie, however I agree with all of you. Is it in the public domain perhaps?

Chongo longo!

L0L a buck. I paid 29 dollars for this, though I'm not dissapointed in my buy.

According to Wikipedia, they never filed for copyright on the film in the US, so yes it is in the public domain in America.

1 Dollar?!?! In the later 90s, while I was in college, a friend and I were experimenting with LSD and we saw the last 30 minutes or so of this movie and it blew our minds!! I had to pick it up but could not find it for sale at any place. I ended up having to special order it through Borders and paid over $20 for the VHS tape version. It's been almost ten years and I still need to get this on DVD.

But I do admit that this movie is very underrated and is one of Orson Wells best movies.

its cause the rights to it aren't owned by any major or minor studio, so any wannabe dvd distribution company can obtain the acquisiton and distribution rights to it for free, thus selling the dvd for dirt cheap, unfortunately, this only results in a muddy picture, the one to get is the one that costs 30 dollars cause there is the cleanest picture, and the best overall quality in general of the movie.

and yeah it wasn't widely available in vhs format as well before the rise of dvd's, not sure why not, possible someone still owened the rights to it???

Alpha Video has this for $5.95.

Hah, I got my dvd of it at the $1 Store. I was really quite surprised to find it there. It's of poor quality, but even in the shape it was in, the film still completely blew my mind. I've read Kafka's stuff before and as trippy as his stories are, they never fail to get the gears in my brain rattling about various things. Put that with Orson Welles' artistic license, and it's something of a precursor to Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
Deep heavy stuff to ponder, man. And way, way underrated.

Paying $1 was too much unless you need some sleep inducement - I fell asleep.

Personally,I thought this was Welles' last gasp as a filmmaker..and what a gasp it is!He could have gone more impressionistic and surreal, but he exercised a beautiful restraint-some of the shots in this rival Kubrick easily. For me,the actual composition and direction in this are up there with Kane and Touch Of Evil. Why it dropped into anonymity?Maybe 'cause its too cerebral for most folk-maybe because Welles' reputation as a difficult auteur whom Hollywood refused to tolerate any longer preceded him in such a monstrous, overshadowing way, that public sentiment was something like,"Oh,he's gone all pretentious and artsy on us".It received limited release at the time, but the question remains-why is it not hailed as part of the canon of great films?Well, for me,it is.

I think that it's a poor film considered what a good book it was. The decision by Welles to merge the positions of the solicitor and the priest was abad one: this merged a good and a bad guy into one, and it seemed narcissistic that he wanted two big roles for himself.

I don't think "The Trial" is an easy book to make into a film seeing as a lot of it consists of thoughts in Josef K's head.

reply

Yes, This film is really overlooked and underrated.

reply

Underrated? How? It has a 7.7, that's pretty damn good for ANY movie.

reply

Just got around to watching this and The Trial is one of the greatest films I've seen. Right up there alongside Lynch's, Tarkovsky's, Bergman's and the likes' top works.

This is Welles' best for me, comfortably ahead of Citizen Kane and Touch Of Evil.
