Really - isn't this just a movie about enabling an alcoholic?

I cannot see this movie as a pleasant yarn as everyone else does. Gleason's character does outrageous things because he is drinking (his "delicate condition") and is irresponsible. I think it is a movie that would never be made today. We do not gloss over people drinking to excess anymore or see it as a source of endless humor. Fred Astaire was wise to pick another movie to do.

You don't have much of a sense of humor do you. I could see complaints if he was one of these violent alcoholics who abuses his wife and kids, but Gleason's character is a nice guy who's just irresponsible with his money after one too many.
