The folk band at Jack's Casino

The band is not listed in the credits. Does anyone recognize them?

reply

I'm not familiar with them, but they are billed as the Modern Folk Quartet here on IMDB. If you click on "more" you get the longer, more complete cast list that includes the uncredited performers.

The Modern Folk Quartet was Henry Diltz (later official photog for The Doors & The Monkees & a chronicler of 60's-90's rock); Jerry Yester (later briefly with Lovin' Spoonful, The Association); Chip Taylor (Monkees producer and writer of Daydeam Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday); and Cy Faryar, whose later career included a stint as Firesign Theater's producer.

The Modern Folk Quartet, or MFQ, as they were known by their fans, were a very popular folk group in the mid-1960s, 1963-1966. I saw them perform live at Doug Weston's Troubadour nightclub, West Hollywood, in April 1964, the first time I ever went out to a Hollywood night spot as a teenager. They were contract recording artists with (what else?) Warner Bros. Records, and you can see their first album on the wall in the record shop scene with Troy Donahue and Stefanie Powers. Also, you will notice ALL the record albums shown in that scene are then-current early 1960s WB Records releases - The Everly Brothers, Peter Paul and Mary, etc.
I love this song they performed in this movie - "The Ox Driver's Song", it's got powerful instrumentation, and really moving with a lot of energy and punch!

The same song is in the Overture sequence of 'How the West was Won'(1962) at the beginning before the opening credits. It sure does sound like MFQ but has a female voice in there too.

reply

Yep, that song is way over 150 years old! My favorite songs in HOW THE WEST WAS WON (or LOST, if you're Native American like me) are "I Am Bound For The Promised Land" sung by the chorus, and "Greensleeves (A Home In The Meadow)" sung by Debbie Reynolds.

Hey mine too!
I am in the course of rediscovering that great film on blu-ray as I had forgotten just how good it is.

I just saw HOW THE WEST WAS WON in the original CINERAMA format on Sunday April 15, introduced by Debbie Reynolds, as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood at the Cinerama Dome. It was awesome to see it on the big screen, in its original wide-screen Stereo format, once again after 50 years!

And how lucky you are! That would be like a dream come true.

Just for the record, "Daydream Believer" was written by John Stewart and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King.

That choice of music SUCKED! Would have been better for them to go to a nightspot featuring twist music. That music would have been so boring to try to dance to.
