Syrupy Sweet, but a Good Movie

Don't get me wrong, I've always enjoyed this movie ever since I first saw it.

But even if it was filmed to serve as a public relations piece for Kennedy, there's WAY TOO MANY places in this film after Cliff Robertson says something where you could write as a reply in the dialogue, "Gee whiz, Mr. Kennedy! You sure are a positive, upbeat guy!" Yeeech!!

But like I said, it's still a good movie....if you just watch it for what it is.

Very very boring movie.

Not just that, but the music is just awful - and it never, ever stops.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

Every time Kennedy comes into the picture, there's a swelling of solemn presidential music. Kind of heavy handed.

... the music is just awful ...
I quite liked the film, but you are so on the money. The soundtrack music is terrible. The occasions it was not used are indeed blessed relief.🐭

Most all the background music used on the soundtrack in "PT 109," other than parts of the main theme (which is heard in its entirety over the end credits, and seems to have been an original composition) was from the Warner Bros. musical library dating back to the 1940's.

The same background music can be heard in many an old Warner Bros. movie, particularly war and action-adventure films.

I like the film a lot. I like knowing about JFK's service record and I like learning about the roll of the PT boats ... yet this film drowns in "happy *beep* that is over emphasized by the music. You comment is spot on.

As much as I love the acting of CR, and respect his life, he was awfully misdirected in PT 109. Was it necessary for every facial expression to say, "Look at me. I'm playing the future president." It seems every actor, except James Gregory, was self conscious of the aura of presidential presence. That is bad directing.
