the drunk buddy

I could never figure out why Buddy shows up drunk for his second date with Stella.....feels like there's a missing scene

Perhaps there is a missing scene, but the implication is that when he is Buddy Love he is out of control. He changed into him during the day so he had all that time being him before his date at night. It is only natural that he would wind up in a bar somewhere and not know when to stop drinking. It is consistant with is personality type and the point of his character is that he is no good, based on people Lewis himself ran across during his career (but definitely NOT Dean Martin...)

it makes sense that Buddy is an out of control egomaniac (and the following day's hangover is a good payoff), but still when this scene starts it's like a visual speed bump....you're momentarily caught up saying "what the..?"...the same thing happens with that oh so incredibly jarring cut from Kelp's first transformation bit to a close up of the shocked tailor's face.
..these little annoyances aside, I love the film ...Kelp's flash back to his parents is one of the all time funniest moments in comedy ...Howard Morris and Elvia Allman are perfect...and Del Moore's dead pan expression when Kelp first walks into his office is priceless
..this and The Ladies Man are Jerry's best.

"IDIOT!..Can't you eat with your mouth closed?!?!"
