I think Jerry always appreciated the role Dean Martin played in his life and becoming the success he did - so no, the Buddy Love character is not a 'swipe' at Dean. they were very different people in temperment and ambition. Jerry was incredibly ambitious and needed to be in control.
I firmly believe this movie represents the two sides of Jerry Lewis. The nerdish, awkward guy trying to fit in (before he met Dean) and the guy with all the success and attention and flash (Buddy Love), the one Dean couldn't stand to work with anymore - and can you blame him? Think of Jerry Lewis hosting the annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethons in the 70's and 80's. They look like they were hosted by Buddy Love...the fake humility, the drama, overly cool persona.
Buddy Love isn't Dean Martin, it's the successful Jerry Lewis.
