Big bands in the 60s?

This is a great movie, Jerry Lewis is funny, Stella Stevens looks great, but the idea that college kids in 1963 would be listening and enjoying big band music-Les Brown and his band of renown- in this era is a stretch.
Hip swinging college kids at ASU during this time must have been listening to to MoTown, Elvis, etc.
Every time I see this movie I think it was what an adult-who grew up in the 40's-would think was hip.
And those college kids. Some of the people in the crowd scenes look like they are at least 40 years old.

At a local college circa 1975 I worked security there while also a student. I was standing around when some of the professors who were on the Student Activities Board were grousing that they had gone to a lot of expense and trouble to secure a "name" musical act for a concert and hardly ANY students bought tickets, The performer? Mel Torme' :the famous "velvet fog"! I TRIED to explain but they just didn't "GET IT." IDIOTS!
