A Classic Movie

I saw this movie for the first time when it was released in 1963 when I was in India.
It impressed me greatly because the plot concentrated on the assassin and not on Gandhi.
People always wonder what drives assassins and how they get motivated and carry out their objective and in this film, the character of Nathuram Godse was well brought out although it was heavily fictionalized. So far as Godse's early life and Hindu fanatical attitudes were concerned it is largely accurate but the part to do with his love life was incorrect and diverted from the facts.
Horst Buchholtz did extremely well as the young Godse especially in the scenes showing life of a Brahmin boy in the village where he grew up.
All the scenes in old Delhi are absolutely accurate and authentic so were random shots of street scenes and the dingy apartment where Godse holed up with the street girl played by Diane Baker. She was so well made up as an Indian girl that it was not possible to think of her as a Caucasian unless one had seen her before. The way she acted, especially in the little actions such as adjusting her long black braids is absolutely authentic.
The last scenes minutes before the murder were also very well directed and gets us into the character of Godse.
Every character in the movie played his her part well and the make up job was flawless.
