In My Opinion...

The best dialogue of any of his films.

By sheer coincidence I finished watching this last night, starting the night before. Yes, the dialogue is exceptional. There is so much depth to such scenes as the interplay between Tomas and Marta in the schoolroom, for example. But the SPACES between words spoken are also very fraught with meaning.

The whole film is virtually perfect. The subject matter and narrative will seem excessively downbeat to too many, but I think it is more ambiguous than such people will understand it to be. It is a parable of the real struggles of faith we experience in life. Both the struggle with faith in God, but also in the faith we have of finding meaning in being with others, in love and care, with all that makes that difficult.

Great film.
