Is this really based on a novel by Naguib Mahfouz? Does anyone know the title of the novel? I see on wikipedia that Mahfouz also wrote screenplays, and because no title for the novel is given here, and he hasn't written a book with the same title as this movie, I wonder if it really is based on a novel or if he wrote it as a screenplay.
If anyone can answer this question for me, I will be grateful! Thank you in advance!
Salah Eldeen is based on true story , i have never heard about a novel by Naguib Mahfouz about him , but i have founded a book it is suppose to be the first book writing about him (sirah alsltan alnasr slah aldin ala'youbi) by : Bahaa Eldin ebn Shadad...very old book ,but i don't know if it is available in english or just in arabic

No it is not, it is based on a story by Youssef al-Sebai. Naguib Mahfouz has only contributed to adjusting that story into a film script (together with Ezz el-din Zulfikar and Muhamad Abdel Gawad). In total, over 6 people have contributed to writing the scenario, including the director Youssef Chahine. hope this helps
