Was this a big hit in America?

I mentioned the title of this movie to my Grandpa (who would've been about 15 when this film was released).

He lived in a small farming town in the middle of South Dakota, but anyways after I mentioned the title to him, I could tell by the look on his face that he had seen it, he then told me that he saw it when it was first released.

So was this film that big of a deal in America? That even theaters in the midwest were showing Mondo Cane back in 1962?

I saw it in the theatre in 1962. It was a huge deal, talked about and promoted in all the media. For some reason the song became a hit, constantly played on the radio, even though it had nothing to do with the movie.
