PETA and ASPCA wouldn't like this one!

Just watching McLintock right now (for the tenth time, at least!) and am up to the bit where Wayne is hunting. Just think of the screams and hollers from the PETA and ASPCA folks over his killing pheasants onscreen!

They'd picket the theatre!

Any thoughts?

PETA is an extreme organization. I think that people will see what they will see. McClintock is hunting, but he also tells his daughter that he is going to turn most of his ranch into a wildlife park. Wayne has always been accused of being Manifest Destiny, but McClintock shows a character that respects the traditions and rights of Native peoples. If people are looking for a political message to the movie, it is one of "rough equality". People earn their respect through their actions in this film.

I had thought of that myself actually. You always see at the end of movies "no animals were harmed in the making of this film". That scene looked awfully real - and it makes sense for it to be real. Special effects weren't up to snuff during that era of movie making.

PETA (or PITA, for Pain In The @$$) should perform a difficult and slightly dangerous act of self-impregnation.

I am a proud member of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals)and firmly believe that there is room for all God's creatures! Right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Releasing captive birds so they can be killed just for a scene in a movie is rather repugnant.

I bet that they were stuffed, eaten, or both.

Also, it has been documented and revealed that the:

"No animals were harmed..."

certification is sold. It is based on a 'donation' to - I think the ASPCA. (I don't want to attribute it to the wrong organization. I think it is the ASPCA, but I may remember that wrong.) They never actually check or audit the film to ensure that animals were not harmed. They issue the certification on payment.
