Am I describing Matango? (possible spoilers)

A long time ago I saw a movie that may be this one. There may be spoilers in my description. I am sorry I do not know how to block out the spoilers.

The movie I rememeber was in black and white and about a group of people eating something on an island that changed them. I was thinking mushrooms but do not remember for certain. The story showed one man who "escaped" but was telling a group of people (authorities?)about what happened. I thought he either went back or was talking about going back at the end of the movie. I thought there was a line abouth him eating the mushrooms but was not changed because he left the island? Is this Matango?

That sounds close enough to the plot of Matango. Once you describe people changing from eating mushrooms on an island, that narrows it down to pretty much this movie and nothing else.

Note that the movie is actually in color, but the movie is visually pretty dark and the prints were often washed out when it was aired on TV years ago, so it's not surprising that you might recall it as a black and white movie.

It's also possible you might be recalling the TV adaptation of this story. It was filmed in 1960 as an episode of the TV series "SUSPICION" starring James Cobourn and Barbara Rush.
