agree with all the ten star ratings

I taped this one and am sorry its not available on DVD. Its the best of it kind.

Romantic comedy and great casting and script.

Quite charming with a good cast, 8/10 seems to have been virtually forgotten.

The way I see it, is that we weren't retreating, we were just attacking in a new direction.

Woke up bleary eyed, let the dog out, grabbed the remote and checked out TCM. I'm surprised I never heard of this movie. It is sweet, funny and clever.

Ricardo plays against type, as does Telly. The former has none of his usual Latin lover, and the latter has none of his usual menance. Boyer's voice usually recalls "Gaslight," which scared the bejebers out of me and interferes with my ability to watch him. Here however, his lovely voice oozes charm in the nicest way.

I will be passing the word along about the film.

reply

Charming yes and I enjoyed it much more now than when I saw it when it first came out, but in hindsight, Glenn Ford is one of the most morose actors ever to come out of Hollywood and most miscast in this kind of frothy comedy. This is the kind of comedy from the 60's that for instance a James Garner, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis, Robert Wagner, Rod Taylor, would have been perfect for!

reply

See, I totally disagree. I think Glenn Ford *makes* this movie. His chemistry with Hope Lange is so real and believable. His down to earth and laconic style keeps this movie from being insipid. He's the perfect foil for her character of the madcap and spoiled heiress, who really is simple and no-nonsense under the surface. I think with a more comedic or slick actor it would have been corny and forgettable.

reply

it's your right to disagree coubo, no one can fault you for your take on the performances and thank you for disagreeing without resorting to the usual cowardly internet namecalling and insulting.

Amen! One thing I like about the older films is their message boards do not usually attract the usual trolls and the above result.

The other point to make is that Hope Lange's character mentioned early on that every man her Uncle had hired, had hit on her and she indicated that was tiresome and tedious.

So a big male star like James Garner or Rock Hudson would have been more inclined to play the part of a macho male lover. They would have noticed her charms at first glance, and immediately made advances towards her - again, not her bag.

That's why Ford's character of John Davis fit the part perfectly. He was very low key, and very slow to react to the sexual chemistry between the two of them. Exactly the type of man she preferred.

reply

well it looks like I'm outnumbered here! I started picturing my suggestions as the male lead and suddenly they seemed too slick & playboyish to be enough of a foil for Ms. Lange's character. So maybe I'm coming over to your side, but I still think Mr. Ford is a rather morose actor.

Must admit that I agree with your adjusted evaluation. James Garner, maybe, but I think he and Rock Hudson would have had difficulty 'fitting' in with the group - too big. Tony Curtis and Robert Wagner, charming, but too 'smooth'. Rod Cameron probably has the qualities, but the 'chemistry' between Glenn Ford and Hope Lange is tough to beat. Loved them in Pocketful of Miracles together, too. There is really no good reason, I suppose, but this is one of my all-time favourites and I keep writing to TCM about releasing on DVD - no luck yet!

reply

Totally agree, and seeing Telly Savalas play the bossy, petulant uncle is priceless!

Yes, a great '60 film. By the way I just found out that Hope Lange and Jessica Lange are NOT related! Hope did have a 3 year relationship with co-star Glenn Ford but they never got married.
