worst. sound. ever.

It's all over the place. So much bad ADR, and sometimes it sounds like it gets sped up for a second. The background laughing is especially bad.

watch this with high end headphones, it's painful.

According to the director, the sound had to be entirely overdubbed because the noise of the ocean was drowning out the dialogue. The kids recorded the dialogue after the filming was done and then the sound was edited word by word which took more than a year. This is all explained in the Criterion Edition commentary.

There is nothing wrong with the sound.

It sounds as though some boys' voices had started to change when they recorded the audio. One of Ralph's speeches in particular sounds a bit deep.

reply

Yah I agree. Poor sound, bad dubbing, but good movie.

I have El Sonoma del Torra de Fiero Syndrome. Be happy you don't. Trust me.

According to a "Trivia" note here, cuts ordered after filming was completed required some dialogue re-recording, and two boys' voices had changed. One's new track was manipulated by engineers to approximate his earlier sound, while the other utilized a different child actor. Hence, the problems you folks detected.

Sounds like they really had their hands full in post. I guess I don't blame them for the quality, but it's still pisspoor.

A black pool opened up at my feet. I dived in. It had no bottom.

I agree. The dubbing and (especially) the foley work were just awful. I say that fully aware of the limitations.

reply

I seriously swear in one scene I could hear cars going by in the background on the overdub. Intolerably bad but yet strangely, I'd watch it again...probably for that very reason.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die has worse sound than this. I didn't notice anything in particular.

The best part is when one kid gets slapped and it somehow makes an electrical short circuiting type sound. Usually threads about "worst ever" are exaggerated but this film really does have the worst sound I have ever heard in a film.
