The End (Spoilers)

What did it mean when kirk douglass was unmasked at the very end. Was it implying he played another character, the broughm father?

reply

It meant nothing other then he was the villan that was masked in the various characters that were able to complete his murderous plot. You'll notice that the last mask he removes is that of the character of Mr. Pythian. The character that kills Gwendolyn La doll in the Fulham Road.

...and Mr. Pythian is the only "masked" character that Douglas actually played in the movie-- with the exception of the Reverend, whom he briefly portrays in the airport lavatory (memorably removing his "eyes").

As mentioned elsewhere in the IMDB entry, most of the time it is actor Jan Merlin behind the killer's masks.

Some of what is being said here is not correct. The final reveal of Kirk Douglas is definitely NOT "PYTHIAN"! Instead it is the film's earliest incarnation of Douglas - the man who kills off John M. Devitt in what is supposed to look like an elevator accident before the film's titles are shown. And since Douglas had to be filmed taking off that particular disguise for the last shot, it seems to me that it is likely that Douglas would have played the entire sequence himself, just for the sake of convenience. Of course I can't verify that, but it seems logical.
