The movie takes place in Tennessee. In the Appalachian Mountians near Knoxville.
shareThe story is set in the Smokey Mountains in Tennesee, which is very close to the North Carolina border. The actual filming was done in Big Bear, CA.
shareThey did a lousy job location scouting on this. Low budget I guess. I come from the Smoky Mountain area and now live in L.A. so I know what the locales look like. I didn't finish watching the film but stayed with it long enough to see the setting. As the soldiers drive up the mountain with Elvis singing his Smoky Mountain Boy song I could see right off the bat that this was not the Smoky Mountains and immediately pegged it for California. The trees and somewhat barren roadsides give it away. I was really hoping for some actual Tennessee location setting but sadly disappointed.
