One of the better toho sci-fi films, imo.

I liked it a lot!

The showa series has left a taint in the minds of americans about Godzilla series forever.

Hysterical subtitles on dvd I saw have almost no connection with dubbed in dialog. That made this as funny as an MST3K masterwork. Why were the subtitles so much different?

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Because they are more faithful than the dubbing trash. I hate dubbing.

Only problem with your answer is some of the actors had to be speaking English because dubbing matches exactly.

I found the movie to be a giant snooze for three-quarters and then it had a fairly tepid finale. Instead we got a lot of tedious build-up regarding the reclusive captain, who let's face it, is no different from a former Nazi General who's holed himself up with dreams of a Fourth Reich. This film ultimately is a classic example of Toho sci-fi's greatest flaw which is to soft-peddle the aggressive past history of Japan which included acts of barbarism on par with that of their German allies. And it also strikes me as hypocritical how so many Japanese sci-fi movies are about the evilness of the atomic bomb and the underlying condemnation of America dropping the atomic bomb to end the nightmare of WW2, but here, the world is saved thanks to a Japanese weapon of war that was intended to serve the interests of an Imperial Power and kill just as many in the pursuit of war.

I've seen better Toho sci-fi movies like "Gorath" and heck, I even found their pretentious "Last War" better than this one.
