Fantomas!

I thought it was pretty cool of Franju to have Detective Cocantin reading Fantomas, not just because it's an obvious reference to Feuillade's serials but because it adds to the pulpish spirit of the movie. And after watching this movie, I wish Franju had made his own version of Fantomas, the Genius of Crime.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

It was actually Franju's wish to do his own version of Fantomas. He wanted Emmanuelle Riva to play Lady Beltham (such a pity it never happened). He actually did "Judex" because it was arguably the thing which came closer to achieving his dream.

I spotted that too. Made me giggle. I'm another who would have liked to see Franju's version of Fantomas.

The Fantomas trilogy is pretty cool as it is, but Franju could have certainly given the whole thing an extra gothic kick in the balls - considering that both Judex as well as Les Yeux Sans Visage are both such excellently atmospheric, unsettling pieces of work.

But that's the deal we're dealing in... as FZ would sing.
