Walter Matthau's voice

I love Walter Matthau. He's always been one of my favorite actors. But I have to say, his voice - a sort of weird lisp with strange accent (the likes of which I've never heard) - drove me crazy in this movie. Watching it on TCM now. I'll finish the movie, but - oh lord - I'm glad WM doesn't sound like this in any of his other movies.

we saw the same airing. they must not show this thing too often considering the lack of recent posts. its not bad but i agree on matthaus voice choice, no need for it. nice to see the the movie/tv odd couple hanging out together though (-:

This was made shortly after Lolita. Mathau seems to be doing Peter Sellers' Claire Quilty accent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-afWrWwbrY4

In an interview with Dick Cavett I saw back in the 1970s, Matthau claimed that he was imitating the director Morton DaCosta and that DaCosta was totally oblivious to the fact that he was being mocked.
