I like most Billy Wilder films but was disgusted by this. There is nothing heart-warming about the sex industry (or feeding alcohol to a dog). It was good to see some comments here and on Netflix from those who found this more objectionable than any nudity would be.
A difficult but worthwhile movie about the reality of such misery is Lilya 4-Ever.

I agree with you about the dog example, but it depends upon how it is played (I haven't seen the film, yet) Always remember though that if a film wants you to find something funny but you don't, then you have the right not to laugh! Doesn't mean you have to complain...
Films have different aims and intentions; Irma La Douce & Lilja 4-ever are clearly not of the same ilk.

Obviously the OP never caught the intentions of the film. We feel disgusted by what she's doing in the beginning, but then they make it look silly and the bartender is telling a line to Nester that is also speaking to the audience: "love is something that is hidden in dark corners while hate is everywhere," and "you're just too bourgeois to understand." We are supposed to feel conflicted about what we see. I felt like it was done brilliantly in that way. It's kind of like the way the book Lolita is written; you start to feel sorry for the main character then realize how disgusting his actions are. So if you were offended by the movie, then you were just too closed minded to really see what was going on in the film.
Oh, and it has a totally different purpose and style than Lilya 4-Ever. It's stupid to compare the two just because they have prostitutes.

Really? This was extremely clean cut and conservative not just by modern standards, but by the standards even 5 years after the release date. I felt the movie does not condone lascivious lifestyles, as the moral standards set by Jack Lemmon end up triumphing over the corrupt police force and low-lives. A prostitute is converted to a wife and mother, and the police beg an honest ex-cop to rejoin the force, how much more moralizing can you get?
You know what's more obscene than nudity, when a perverse narcissistic God tells Abraham to kill his son, and he is ready to comply, and gets the status of prophet while the twisted God continues to receive praise. In other words the God d*n motherf*g crappy delusional Bible is more obscene than this movie.

It is a very good movie when taken for what it is.
That would be a comedy.
