I met him!!!

I was living in Las Vegas in November of 2006 and I went to get a haircut at a barbershop on Charleston Avenue - at least, I think it was on Charleston Ave. After that, I walked next door to a video store. I kept thinking the elderly man at the counter looked familiar and he and I got to talking about cult movies. He asked me if I was familair with "Incredibly Strange Creatures..." and I told him yes, I had seen it but would like to see it again. I then realized who he was. He was pleased that I knew his name without having to be told. (I started to ask if he was Cash Flagg, but remembered it was a stage name). When I said, "Are you by chance Ray Dennis Steckler?" his face lit up and he told me he was. We talked for almost an hour about low-budget cult films. He signed my VHS cope of "Incedibly Strange Creatures..." and he could not have been nicer. We talked about Las Vegas films, Ed Wood, video stores and movies in general. Just a nice man. I hated to hear he passed away. Mr. Steckler, RIP. From your fan and friend, John

So he had his own video store?

Yes, it didn't appear to be a large store but there were lots of cult and movies of that type, so it was my kind of store. If my memory is correct we talked about actress Liz Renay, who was also a LV resident.

holy smokes - that's crazy! crazy that you remembered this dude's name too! I'm glad to hear that your opinion of his was that of a very nice older man. if he'd asked me if I'd seen it, I'd have no doubt put my foot in my mouth, but you seem to have had an ideal response to his question. you most definitely made that guy's day! nice.

OH my god, I know the video store you are talking about! Red Rock Video on Charleston next to a barber shop, I live perhaps two blocks away from there!

I really wish I'd known it was run by RDS, I would have gone in to say hi before he passed.

That also explains why the little shop closed down, it must have been just after his death that I noticed it was no longer operating.

What a small world.
